The Missing Line on Every Quote

Every quote for a move measures the same four things: weight, volume, distance, time.

The trouble is the half of the job that never makes it onto a quote at all. Here's some of what isn't on any you've been sent.

The toddler asleep in the one room that's already been cleared, who'll wake the moment furniture starts moving past the door. The dog who has watched the house come apart all week and has quietly concluded that something is wrong. The person standing in the middle of it, turning something over in their hands, deciding whether it belongs to the old life or the new one — for what must be the hundredth time since morning.

The wardrobe that comes down a narrow Porto staircase without leaving a single mark on the wall. Not because someone was strong. Because someone was paying attention.

None of that fits on an invoice. And this is the point where the easy word to reach for is "human," and where people start to talk about feelings — but that isn't quite it. This is half the job. Not the soft half; the real one.

What gets measured gets managed

There's an old line — what gets measured gets managed. A company prices what it can count, hires for it, trains for it, gets good at it. The quiet part is the rest of that sentence, the half nobody says out loud: what doesn't get measured slowly turns invisible, and what's invisible, in the end, becomes optional. On most moves the lifting is the simple part — heavy, but simple. What decides whether you barely remember the day afterwards, which is the finest thing a move can be, is everything happening around the lifting.

People feel this, even when they don't have a word ready for it. So afterwards they say things like "they were lovely," or "they treated my things as if they were their own." Different words, the same thing underneath. We don't have a cleverer word for it than care — it's simply how we've come to see the work. And, quietly, it's the biggest reason people call us a second time and pass our name to a friend.

How to read a handful of near-identical quotes

Which is worth holding onto if you're the one choosing, with a handful of near-identical quotes in front of you. The four numbers will come out roughly the same wherever you look — that's the easy half, the half anyone can do. The other half doesn't fit on a quote, and no one can honestly promise it to you in advance; nobody knows whether a day will go gently before it happens.

What you can do is read what people said afterwards — and notice what their words are actually about. Plenty of reviews will tell you a company was quick and on time. Good, and necessary, and still the easy half. The ones worth their weight are the ones where someone moved in more or less your situation — with a baby, with a nervous cat, with the one thing they couldn't bear to see scratched — and came away feeling looked after. That's the half you're really choosing between.
